Event: TBILISI RIOT

Several thousands special troops and police officers are using force against protesters in
downtown Tbilisi. People attempt to take refuge in adjacent streets from soldiers
armed with batons and water cannons. Tear gas is being used as well. The protesters are in panic.
Georgian riot police fired rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannon on Wednesday to break up a six-day-old rally by protesters demanding the resignation of President Mikhail Saakashvili.
Georgian opposition leaders told U.S.
Ambassador John Tefft how the demonstration in central Tbilisi was
broken up. "The ambassador promised to us to transfer exhaustive information
about the events in Tbilisi to Washington," one of the opposition
leaders, Salome Zourabichvili, told journalists.
